Yes to The Greatest Canadian City
HALIFAX
After much research on the Atlantic coast city of Halifax, I have decided that it would be a great place to live. The city is full of cultural and musical events throughout the year. It also has a strong balance of job opportunities, with resource based and government based jobs. A final very appealing aspect of the city is the surrounding landscape and the maritime climate.
Halifax is a unique city with many friendly and welcoming residents. The diversity among the modern city creates a distinct Nova Scotian result, with Scottish, French, Gaelic, Mi'kmaq, African-Nova Scotian and many other cultures mixed in. The city is alive with art and culture from various branches of the world. There are many art communities, modern musicians and Theatre scenes thriving in Halifax. The young population that attends the various universities in the city support these emerging and creative scenes. A specific form of Celtic music has even developed in Halifax and there are many fiddling festivals and events to celebrate this style of music.
Another positive factor about Halifax are the many job opportunities presented in the different sectors. The jobs in the city are very well balanced with resource based jobs in the fields of forestry, mining, fishing and agriculture, but there also are enough government office jobs to add stability in case of a resource crisis. For instance, when the depletion of the fish crisis happened, the city quickly adapted and created a solution. The issue with the jobs in Halifax is that unless you are interested in working in either of these two fields, there are not a lot of other jobs in other sectors and many young people leave the city to find work in other fields.
Halifax is also appealing as a city to live in because of the mountains and bodies of water surrounding it. There are lakes and rivers all throughout Nova Scotia, and multiple mountain ranges, as it is in the Appalachian region. Also, because of the water surrounding the city, Halifax has a Maritime climate. This means moderately warm summers and cool winters. One of the challenges of the climate however is the large amounts of snow the Halifax receives. Although the Atlantic Ocean directly affects the climate, it also provides a prime source of enjoyment. Another positive aspect is the fact that Halifax is a very condensed city, making it easy to leave and enjoy the ocean, the waterways, the sandy beaches, the mountains and the hiking trails that this region has to offer.
Halifax seems like great city to live in with the positive aspects outweighing by far the minor negatives. From its physical geography to its maritime climate, from its cultural activities to its attractions, from its vast array of natural resources to its variety of government jobs, Halifax seems like a well rounded sustainable city that will thrive and grow in the future. I look forward to discovering and exploring Halifax myself one day.
